Testimonials

Laraine Lim Wenxin joined the Cyber Security Engineering Centre (CSEC) of the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore (CSA) as an intern from 1 st March to 22nd July 2022.

During her internship, she was assigned to explore a novel proof-of-concept for threat sensemaking using data analytics. The task is challenging, having to deal with a mix of disparate datasets, and an exploratory mindset to derive an effective way to process and glean insights from the voluminous data. In the process, she displayed great initiative and resourcefulness in trying anything and everything from different angles.

Laraine has an astute mind, able to grasp new concept quickly and translate it to real-world understanding, so as to deliver deep technical analysis. She is a fast learner and agile programmer. It is especially commendable for someone who is almost a novice with little professional experience or training. A critical success factor is her meticulous and methodical approach to this data analytics challenge which involved millions of records. Her attention for details and effectiveness in working across different engineering teams to appreciate and bring their various technical perspectives to bear, enable her to successfully connect the dots, and extract unexpected new insights.

Importantly, she demonstrated excellent communication skills and superb clarity of thought. She is able to present her ideas simply and clearly, and exudes a great sense of self confidence, unfazed in the face of scrutiny by a panel of domain expertise or senior management.

Laraine’s internship is part of CSA’s programme intended to expose aspiring candidates from Institutes of Higher Learning with realworld experiences, to develop their interest, and enhance their industry-readiness upon graduation. We are confident that she will do very well in the future. Her stellar performance in this internship stint bears testimony to that and sets her up for success in any career path she chooses, particularly for cybersecurity!

Laraine demonstrated that she was a keen and quick learner, and she was receptive to feedback. When Laraine first joined us, she had little knowledge on malware analysis. Through online tutorials and some guidance, she was able to quickly pick up the skills required and produced good quality technical analysis of malware samples.

She is a diligent person. Apart from technical analysis, Laraine also attempted threat actor analysis by using her research to derive the intent of the malware and the actor.

She sought out the best ways to solve the tasks given to her. Being independent and resourceful, Laraine would source for solutions by herself before approaching others for opinions or help.

Laraine had a positive and cheerful attitude that created a joyful atmosphere at the workplace with her peers.

Given her positive attitude and eagerness to learn, she will fit well into roles in Security Software Development, Cybersecurity Software Research or Malware Research.
